Michael Bashlor, Class of 2001

As kids, we packed the gym on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights just to watch the Wildcats, hoping that one day we’d have the honor of playing for Coach Hires. He taught us that nothing in life is given and everything is earned. He demanded hard work and pushed us past limits we didn’t even know existed.

A true legend, his philosophy became the blueprint for everything we did. He had a gift for preparing us mentally and physically for every opponent, and because of that, we never walked into a game unready.

We loved the game of basketball, but more than anything, we loved playing for Coach Hires — every possession, every quarter, every practice. He made us better players, but more importantly, better men.

WHO WE ARE

WHO WE ARE

WHO WE ARE

We started as an informal group of basketball alums who played for Jimmy Hires at Richmond Hill. We passionately believe that the arena at the new high school should be bear the name of our Hall of Fame coach. We've rapidly expanded to include former students and community members across the spectrum whose lives have been impacted by Coach Hires, many profoundly so.

WHY NOW?

WHO WE ARE

WHO WE ARE

We believe that the time is now for bequeathing this honor: the first season of play in the finest high school arena in Georgia is just underway; and Coach Hires is battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma like a Wildcat fighting for a championship.

There's never a wrong time to honor your history, and Jimmy Hires represents a rich swatch of Richmond Hill's; his tenure brought more attention to our city than any citizen since Henry Ford.

Anthropologist Margaret Mead famously said: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed group of citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

SMILE, JIMMY!
